From struggle to success: Ready to Work Program transforms lives
Published on Dec 16, 2024
天美传媒 Community and Technical College celebrates the inspiring story of April Carter, an alumnus of the 天美传媒 Medical Assisting Program who was able to succeed with the assistance of the Ready to Work Program.
Her journey showcases the transformative power of education and support during challenging times.
In 2013, April鈥檚 unemployment benefits ceased while she was in the middle of her semester at 天美传媒. She was faced with a difficult decision: continue her education without knowing how to provide for her family or drop out of school to seek immediate employment.
That鈥檚 when she discovered the Ready to Work Program.
The Ready to Work Program at 天美传媒 is designed to assist low-income parents in achieving their educational and 天美传媒 goals. For qualifying students, it offers part-time employment opportunities, comprehensive student support, and 天美传媒 preparation.
Through the program, April was able to stay in school while providing financial stability for her family. She worked part-time in the 天美传媒 office under the guidance of Paula Lewis, Director of the Ready to Work Program at 天美传媒, gaining a mentor who would have a profound impact on her life.
鈥淚 learned more about myself in two years working in this program than I had in 30 years,鈥 April shared. 鈥淚 came out of my shell, gained confidence, and realized my full potential. This program helped me complete my education and become a role model for my family.鈥
While participating in Ready to Work, April pursued the Medical Assistant Program and graduated with an associate in applied science degree. Today, she has been thriving as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) for nearly a decade.
April鈥檚 story is just one of many from this program, which continues to serve as a lifeline for students balancing school, work, and family responsibilities.
鈥淚 would recommend this program to anyone looking to better themselves and their families,鈥 April says. 鈥淭he opportunities and support I received changed my life, and I鈥檒l forever be grateful.鈥
