What is a Medical Laboratory Technician?

This program prepares students to become a medical laboratory professional who is qualified by academic and applied science education to provide service and research in medical laboratory science and related areas in rapidly changing and dynamic healthcare systems. The Medical Laboratory Technician will perform tests to analyze body fluids, tissue, and other substances in the following core areas: immunohematology (blood banking), microbiology, hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, and immunology.

Admission Requirements

Acceptance into the Associate Degree Medical Laboratory Technician program is based on a selective admissions process. Requirements include:
  • application for admission to college;
  • official transcript from each college or university previously attended;
  • official high school transcript verifying graduation or official passing GED scores;
  • attendance at one Pre-Admission Conference per admission cycle;
  • successful completion of MAT 110, equivalent or higher quantitative reasoning course with a grade of "C" or higher;
  • GPA of 2.00 or better in all college coursework (not just one class);
  • all college and program admission requirements on file by April 1st of each year for consideration of admission in the fall semester;
  • documentation of computer literacy as defined by KCTCS.

Attendance at one conference (per admission cycle) is MANDATORY in order to be considered for admission to the Medical Laboratory Technician Program beginning August 2024. Pre-registration is NOT required.

  2. Maintain laboratory materials and equipment.
  3. Prevent and detect technical errors.
  4. Solve problems as they occur in the clinical laboratory.
  5. Carry out an established quality assurance program.

  7. Follow established clinical laboratory safety guidelines.
  8. Demonstrate responsibility for his / her own behavior and dependability towards required duties.
  9. Follow all institutional policies.
  10. Apply the principles of medical ethics.
  11. Demonstrate a satisfactory working relationship with peers and clinical instructors.
  12. Exhibit enthusiasm and initiative towards all subject areas
  13. Recognize his or her own limitations and seek help when necessary.
